What are your favourite animals?

Definitely cats. Oh, wait. Maybe not.

Every now and again, I read something which reminds me that, actually, Louis Catorze isn’t the worst cat in the world. You cannot imagine the relief to find out that your cat is only moderately horrendous, as opposed to the absolute worst.

A friend of mine told me about these Japanese street signs, which are exactly what they appear to be: they’re to warn hapless passers-by that marauding cats could attack at any minute.

Warning: synchronised team of marauding ninja cats! (Photo from fakti.bg.)

Now, Catorze can be a marauder from time to time but, in reality, the chances of being accosted in the street by him are fairly slim. Even if you happened to be walking past Le Château at the exact moment of his gadding about at The Front, it’s very rare for Catorze to follow anyone down the street (well, ok, apart from that one time). Plus the odds would be even further against you if you happened to be female.

In Japan, however, the fact that there are so many of these warning signs, and in more than one area, suggests that this is a widespread issue, not just a one-off mishap. This is clearly something that happens a lot, with several cats.

Who are these predatory felines? What do they want? And is anyone tempted to send their bitter enemies over there, with pockets full of catnip, to find out?

Yes, he was mid-scream here.

True! I think dogs can be quite cute from afar, but I don’t really want to be deeply involved with them.

But he largely attacked people who deserved it, right? I don’t think you owed them a warning.

He attacked people “he” thought deserved attacking, with a preference for O-negative blood.

Ohhh. That puts a rather different complexion on it.

Do you have marauding cats in your area? Are they individual ones or gangs?

No marauding cats in my neighbourhood, only a pesky Stone/Beech marten who likes to destroy the electrical cables in our cars…

In Japan, cats are a sign of good luck 🙂 These signs are funny and I’m sad I never saw one when I was in Japan last year! The first one just says “watch out for animals,” not necessarily cats, and the second one says specifically “watch out for jumping cats.” It’s funny because the kanji after the word “neko” (cat) means “flying” so initially I thought it meant “watch out for flying cats!” And indeed, the image looks like a squadron of flying cats 😆 That’d be so cool to see!!!

Take the idea from the Japanese. Put a sign on your door of a black shadow that resembles a cat with two very long white fangs and says Beware, of attack cat.

Nooo, we need to present him as calm and well-behaved so that we can say, “It must have been some other black cat” when something untoward happens.

I think Louis would escort burglars to the family jewels!

Oh yes. He would purr, roll and snuggle the burglars too.

It would be an interesting story to tell if one were attacked by a marauding band of cats in Japan. I’ve never seen a cat run up to a person.
