How do you want to retire?

Louis Catorze is, apparently, seventy-two in cat years, so he is well into retirement. However, nobody seems to have told him this. Or, if they have, he hasn’t listened.

To outsiders, he still looks like a playful little kitten, doing all the other things that he did whilst younger: jumping onto and off beds, 3am parkour, scaling high fences to go wandering somewhere he has no business being, and so on. He still eats, drinks, plays and screams. He even still hunts from time to time.

But, one morning last week, when I followed him downstairs for breakfast, I noticed that he wasn’t galloping down as he usually does. Instead, he would gallop a couple of steps, then take a couple gently, then gallop again, and so on.

Oui, Mesdames et Messieurs: he is finally starting to show signs of his age, reminding us that he is an old man and not a rambunctious kitten. This made me a little sad, but then he doesn’t know that he’s an old man. And, if he did, he wouldn’t give a shit.

Here he is, wondering whether to show off his apex predator hunting prowess or just bid the bird a friendly bonjour. Turn the volume up:

(Spoiler alert: he went for the latter.)

Louis has a nice little voice. Sounded like he was explaining something to the bird.

I think he was telling the bird what he did to the last bird, like Hannibal Lecter did to Clarice Starling. “I ate his liver with some haricots and a nice Beaujolais. Nomnomnom!”

I think I prefer Louis to Lecter, but then I’m not a bird.

There are times when I think Louis IS Lecter. 😬

Sabrina and Marcus agree – he’s still an apex predator. He just chooses his time and place with greater care.

I think birds are a bit too much for him; he’s only caught one in his whole life, to our knowledge!

Thank you for the video. Given how is tail moved, I don’t think it was a friendly hello 🙂.

His tail slaps from side to side when he’s happy. I know, this is completely weird for cats, but it’s true for him!

So far, Louis has been the oddest cat I have heard speaking about 😺

I know! 🤣🤣🤣 I have a friend who tries playing with him and gets very scared when his tail starts thrashing from side to side. I’ve told her repeatedly that it’s fine, but she’s still nervous.

He sounds and looks so much like Cheeky it’s amazing. Cheeky now plods on her front legs and they appear to be getting shorter. She thinks she’s becoming the matriarch of the family and likes to attempt smacking Theo and Dolly to keep them online but now there’s a new member of the family, young Winnie, a 12 week old lab retriever pup who doesn’t listen to Cheeky’s house rules and thinks it’s funny to wind her up, once Cheeky givers her a slap she’ll realise she’s at the bottom of the ranks! Kick that rotten covid out the door young lady, you don’t want to miss the joy of a chilly longest day on Friday xxx
