Earlier this week, we took Louis Catorze to the vet for his steroid shot.

He has lost weight and is now down to 3.05kg, but this is quite normal for him at this time of year. However, rather more worrying has been his recent increased ear-scratching and head-shaking. And, when the vet stuck a cotton bud into his ear, she told us that she had “never seen gunge that colour [grey] before”.

Oh dear. Only Catorze could ooze freakish alien mank unknown to the world of science.

The vet called back a few days later to tell us that Catorze’s ears were “yeasty and waxy” with “ROS bacteria” (Reactive Oxygen Species, apparently – no idea what this means). Treatment will involve giving him ten drops (!) of ointment in each ear (!!) every day for a week (!!!!!!!).

Catorze doesn’t even like anything lightly brushing against his ears, so the thought of pulling them open and squirting liquid in doesn’t bear thinking about. Unlike the spot-on, where I’ve always got away with flinging the contents of the vial in Catorze’s direction and considering the job done if a few drops landed on him, with ear medication it’s pointless doing it half-arsèdly. There’s even a special way that you have to hold the ear when you’re doing it, otherwise the liquid just swishes around the outside and doesn’t go in.

The medicine, a product called Aurizon, sounds pretty severe. We have to monitor Catorze very closely and, if he displays any signs such as weird walking and head tilting, we’re to stop treatment and take him to the vet immediately.

Oh. Mon. Dieu.

Cat Daddy: “It might not be too bad. Wait till you try it.”

“You”?

Anyway, I have collected the ear drops from the vet, and I’m optimistically hoping that the little sod will sit for me as beautifully as this YouTube cat does for his human.

He won’t, will he?

Witchcraft and/or rum are the only things that will make this work.

Actually, considering how high proof rum is (I am a rum drinker myself) it might be just as effective if you put several drops of rum in his ears. The alcohol may serve as an antiseptic, and , if absorbed through his skin, might improve his mood.

Nooo! You’ve seen how he is when sober! Imagine him on alcohol?

I’d go with the Witchcraft for him and the rum por vous.

CD needs to step up. It’s a two person job in the YouTube video and that’s with a calm, patient cat. Imagine how many people it would take to treat Catorze!

We once took him for a blood test and four adult humans couldn’t restrain him.

Good luck! I remember squirting stuff for ear mites into a couple of cats’ ears, but it must have been fairly easy. No traumatic memories.

We squirt an ear cleaning solution with an added steroid into the Newf’s ears once a week to prevent ugly stuff from happening in the depths of said ears. Each ear has to be massaged from the outside for one minute and then swabbed out. She doesn’t like it much, but submits, knowing that special treats will follow. Also, Newfoundland dogs are noted for being calm and phlegmatic, unlike Catorze, judging by your posts.

I can imagine 100% of dogs accepting this process better than 100% of cats.

I do hope Louis will recover quickly. I also do hope you’ll be « lucky enough to have a helper ». Take heart.

3.05kg…?! Oh wow… Jimi is still +6kg… But he’s heading in the right direction, he lost +300gr compared with his BW in November.
Have a great weekend, my friends!

Yup: Le Roi is TINY. He’s always been tiny but this is low even for him. The good thing is that none of this is affecting his mood. Or his voice. 🙄

Good luck. Gus gets yeasty ears. I have drops to use. I don’t put that many in though. It’s just a few drops twice a day when it’s active. Once you put the container in the ear you can’t count the drops unless they gave you a dropper. Good luck and wear long sleeves.

I remember you mentioning the yeasty ears and I was about to ask what kind of patient he was. Did he sit nicely or fight like a psycho?

Psycho but a calmer psycho than Louis. I have to clean his ears every week now and that’s a two person job. When I was doing the ear drops I would corral him with my body and do it fast. For cleaning I do multiple cotton swabs and it takes longer so definitely a two-person job. I hope the vet did a thorough cleaning because that’s a good start.

Ugh, cotton buds! I honestly don’t think I could cope with having to clean Sa Maj’s ears too.

Oh my goodness, you know how I have an experience for everything you say about with dear Catorze?? Well…

I’m back in touch, after years of no connection, with my only surviving auntie. And you’d think that has nothing to do with your cat don’t you? Well here’s the thing…

My auntie has a lot of health issues and to help her alongside a plethora of medication she has to take daily steroids. She had an urgent call outside of hours (8pm) on Friday 2 weeks ago to say she must collect an emergency prescription from the town where she had just travelled a couple of hundred miles for a weekend break and start taking it immediately and they needed to see her on the Monday morning, so she had to cut the weekend short and start her journey home on the Sunday, so sad for her and the relatives she was visiting because she may not be able to travel that distance again.

Anyway at the doctor appointment she was told that they’d discovered a fungus growing in her ear, which could potentially make her completely lose her hearing and this is all down to continual taking of steroids. She cannot go without steroids. The urgency was to check the other ear where she didn’t have a build up of unpleasant gunk, just to see if it was brewing. Luckily it wasn’t but she now has to treat both ears separately to avoid cross contamination. She had had her left ear done because it was itchy and uncomfortable and she felt she couldn’t hear properly, the amount of stuff in her ear was excessive and had happened over a short period of time so she had mentioned it in her consultation for another illness. This sounds so like Catorze. Can you imagine the strife if he started to not hear you rather than ignore your calls?? So good that you picked up on this at the time of him having his steroid injection. And the other thing is that it’s rare enough for humans, so the people and the animal doctors may not have a shared in this information so the vet may not know the connection. Just thought you may want to chat to the vet at some stage and point this out… You know, sharing is caring eh??

Maybe not the same diagnosis, but just in case 😉

You kknow I don’t think she actually likes cats, well not doesn’t like them more like they’re not on her radar. She says she’s getting her husband to check her ears for mushrooms every night bless her! She’s 85 and she’s so excited to be back in contact with me but she has incredibly poor health so we’re trying to find a suitable time for me to drive 166 miles to visit her!
