What snack would you eat right now?

Clearly nothing. Bastard cat.

Cat Daddy and I can’t abide food waste. So it really hurts us to be throwing away perfectly edible Orijen – especially as it’s more expensive than cocaine and gold combined – just because a certain little shit doesn’t like the way we’ve served it.

One of the benefits of Louis Catorze was that he didn’t have set mealtimes. So not only were we able to give him food if we were going out, knowing that he would happily eat it later when he was hungry, but we could tell chat-sitteurs to feed him when it suited them, not upon his command. However, if you’re having to pour boiling water onto his food, he doesn’t like it if it’s been left to soak in for ages. Once the food has absorbed too much water and gone soggy, he’s not interested.

The obvious answer to this would be to feed him only when he looks hungry. I thought this was a pretty foolproof method when it came to minimising waste: just wait until he’s circling his plate like a hungry saltwater crocodile and screaming bloody murder, right? Well, so I thought … until he looked at my labour-intensive offering, sniffed it, walked away and went outside.

He’d just been screaming for me to hurry up, SECONDS BEFOREHAND.

Cat Daddy noticed the same thing, and wondered whether Catorze just liked to know before going out that there would be food there when he returned. I can’t imagine how any animal would have evolved to think this – after all, leaving food unattended in the wild would mean some impinger taking advantage, non?

So now we can’t feed him if he’s not asking for food, nor can we feed him if he IS asking for food.

We don’t understand this animal. Someone, please, help us out here.

Weird little beast with Photoshop-effect alien eyes.

Sigh…felines. I expect we caretakers will never fully understand the inner workings of their brains. We can only try – and try again.

Been there. Done that. Going through something right now regarding Ramses’ delicate digestive tract. Just like humans, every cat is unique. Since they can’t tell us in human language what’s going on we have to guess and try different approaches. It doesn’t help that they are stoic by nature, either.

And they know that we’ll keep trying until we hit upon the right thing!

It sounds like you’re having quite the adventure with Louis Catorze! Cats can certainly be mysterious and picky, but it’s clear you’re putting in a lot of effort to understand and care for him. I love the humorous way you’ve described your experiences with Catorze’s eating habits. It’s not just entertaining but also relatable for any pet owner who’s faced similar challenges. Keep up the great work and patience with your feline friend – it’s evident how much you care for him, even when he’s being a little rascal! 🐾🥰

Thank you! He’s a little rascal at least 50% of the time (and the other 50%, he’s asleep). 😫😫😫

He has evolved to know that if he leaves food in the house, no stray scavenger will come along and gobble it. Especially if it is cold and soggy.

But he still does the thing where he taken one piece out and eats it away from his bowl, to make sure I’ve not poisoned it, before eating the rest. 🤷‍♀️

I can’t help you. Timon behaves like a normal cat.
This morning, he asked to be fed, sniffed the bowl and asked to go outside. About twenty minutes later, he asked to go inside, emptied his plate and asked to go outside once again.
Right now, he is probably examining the soil covered with snow, looking for some interesting activity. He could stay indoors and jump up to my lap, but he doesn’t believe that such an activity is worth doing.

Was there also human food out at that moment, or perhaps he smelled something edible that had been consumed and became indignant at having been offered his usual fare? My pack would troll the kitchen looking at me accusingly if they got a whiff of anything I’d just eaten, as if to say “how dare you not give us any!”🙄

He’s recently started to show an interest in human food, but throughout most of his life he’s not been bothered. And there wasn’t any available to him at the time. So … 🤷‍♀️

Lol welcome to my world!! Merlot changes his mind about his food halfway through eating it, and that’s just normal Merlot. Currently I have frozen beef and frozen chicken defrosting in the microwaaaavey in desperation that as one or the other might raise a spark on his taste buds, then hopefully as he tries to pick out today’s favoured meat from his dog food, he will eat more than he means to, get the taste of chicken and devour the lot! I’m in a hurry so I’m guessing that won’t happen and I’ll have to roll my sleeves up and pick it up bit by bit with my fingers and then his lordship may eat a decent amount. Then I decontaminate my fingers and go to the opticians to try on my new glasses hoping and praying that I don’t smell like a butcher shop! And yes, we’ve been through the cold/hot water pallava, bashed dry food, blitzed dry food blah blah blah and on it goes. I should point out here that I’ve not had dogs that eat their food since the year 2000,seeing as I’ve fostered dogs in that time you can imagine that’s a lot of malnourished dogs I’ve dealt with!!

Our cats seem to conspire to be picky together. Recently I bought a few small cans of new cat food, and they loved it. The other day, I saw it in a 12-pack but in big cans. It was 25 percent off, so I bought it. Now I have a case of food nobody likes.

I bet if you’d bought 3 cans at full price, they’d still like it.

Maybe. I think the more money you spend the less likely they will eat it.

A bit unusual but not unheard of. Two out of five cats here (Amber and Finn) sometimes sing dramatically for their dinner, only to stalk away in disgust once dinner is served. In terms of food waste, no worries. Three out of five cats will happily consume the rejected extra servings.

Hahaha! Do Amber and Finn ever change their minds about rejecting their food and come back to it? Or is it too late by then?
