Do you spend more time thinking about the future or the past? Why?

Whilst I can’t claim to see inside Louis Catorze’s mind, I’m fairly certain he can’t fathom the future. And, since he has the memory of a swatted gnat, I don’t suppose he reflects much on the past, either. The little sod is very much focused on what’s happening in the present. And, right now, he is doing what he does every morning: snoozing on my lap whilst I sip a cup of tea.

This is what we do every morning, before the world wakes up. I make the most of this time because, once Cat Daddy is up, it’ll be all about him and Catorze will drop me like a hot stone.

I like to think that Catorze enjoys this time, too. If, like now, we’re going through a cold snap*, sometimes he warms his tail on my cup of tea, like this:

Oolong tea is an excellent tail-warmer.

*Non-Brits: a cold snap in the UK means 1°C lower than it was the day before.

Starting every day like this doesn’t necessarily guarantee good things to follow, but it’s certainly the best start anyone could hope for. And, when I go to bed, I think about the future: specifically the next morning, and being able to do this all over again.

He’s a cat. If he didn’t enjoy it, he wouldn’t do it.

I’ve been going through some very dusty and musty greetings card, photos and little bits of this and that that my 3 girls gave my mum over the years. The cards, my 1st birthday card from my dear Uncle (65 years and months ago) and at least a 3rd and a 4th birthday card, can’t describe how the old ‘card’ feels after so many years, it’s not pleasant and gives rise to many sneezes. But also the very old photos, going back over 85 years ago (Kitty being into the family tree research would know, but as my Auntie was 85 just a couple of weeks ago and my mum would have been 89 in February coming I base my guess on that) and that sends me way back to when I was less than 2 1/2 years old because I can actually remember back then. But don’t ask me about 2 1/2 minutes ago, or what I am doing right now going into my bedroom because I don’t have a clue. I found a scan picture of my youngest baby, she turns 30 in March, so that takes me straight back to then, I entitled the scan picture as ‘mummy’s next’ which was an in joke between my mum and I, so that takes my mind off onto other family members and on and on it goes. I don’t think much of the future because if I can’t remember a minute ago I’ve no chance of remembering something that hasn’t happened yet! Future to me is just a wish for my 3 girls and their families, 4 grandchildren which I just want them all to be safe, well and happy, then the anxiety rises rapidly as I worry about the dreadful things lurking only just over 1,000 miles away with war and the total injustices in the world. And I remember being about 7 or 8 years old and going to bed crying about the news, thinking we were going to war with all the troubles in Northern Ireland. For now I’ll just focus on the new songs we are going to be learning this term in Rock Choir (7 years) and the new songs in Ashford Sings! Choir (3 months) and think back to all the amazing gigs I sang leading up to Christmas and look forward to the gigs we will do this year. At the moment I’m utterly exhausted with my ‘ills’, I longed for cold weather about 4 days ago because the rain was making me ache in my bones and I was sick of hearing the wind batter my windows and now it’s cold I’m in agony in my muscles… There, that’s my brain emptied 😜 I have a picture of Louis’ tail in my mind, Alice’s Theo (renamed Darren by Violet, not a clue why or where she learned the name from when she could first speam!) has a knack of putting his huge long fluffy tail IN my tea and the first I know of that sometimes is as I’m drinking I suddenly notice all the wet black fluff on my mug!! But yes, it sounds like bliss having a time of day when you have Louis cuddles all to yourself ❤️

I’m surprised you’ve not freaked out over the tail, after all that’s near the rear and also the tail can come in contact with other ‘matter’ not of Louis’ and from high and low everywhere he goes lololol

It was the TIP of the tail, thank God. (Still tipped the tea away after that, though.)

You are lucky. Timon hardly ever comes onto my lap.
About having the memory of a swatted gnat, I go to Brussels every other Wednesday to look after two of my grandchildren who live there and as soon as I enter their house, Piet, their dwarf rabbit comes to say me hello.

Awww! A dwarf rabbit! I bet he’s super-cute (and still bigger than Catorze).

      I prefer cats to rabbits.
Unlike a cat, a rabbit is unable to retract its claws. When you put a rabbit on your lap, you are often scratched and it can be painful even if the rabbit is dwarf.

Actually, rabbits don’t have claws. They have very tough nails which are designed for digging burrows. A pet rabbit whose nails need clipping can really wound you.

Awww, what a sweet morning ritual. Once in a while Sasha will climb into my lap. If Gus (my male cat) comes into the room, she dumps me like a day old bagel! They have their favorites!

“Like a day-old bagel” is a brilliant phrase. I usually use “like a hot stone” but yours is so much better!

There is nothing harder or staler than a day old bagel except maybe a week old one. You could probably build a house with those! 🙂

That sounds like such a comforting routine, especially if the morning is chilly ! And with Catorze it may be the last peaceful moments of your day !

It’s true, it’s the only time of day when he’s not completely manic. Maybe he needs to be eased gently into the day … or maybe he’s worn out from his nocturnal shenanigans!
