Cat Daddy came home from his weekend away on Monday morning. Upon his return, Louis Catorze completely failed to acknowledge him, choosing, instead, to sleep on my lap. This kind of behaviour is utterly out of character for him. And there was no full moon, no Mercury Retrograde, no thinning of the veil, no Lucifer Rising … in fact, No Excuse Whatsoever.

Sometimes you just KNOW when something is afoot, don’t you? In Catorze’s case, seeing him on his best behaviour and/or choosing me over his favourite person, are good reasons for suspicion and general unease.

I messaged my friend to tell her that that the apocalypse was nigh, and she replied, “He’s up to something”.

I knew it. Ugh.

Later that afternoon, Catorze sat creepy-staring at a completely full bowl. I picked up the bowl, waved it under his nose to remind him of its fullness and set it back down again, but he remained statue-still and didn’t even flick a whisker. I then realised that he wasn’t creepy-staring at the bowl at all, but at an area just to the right of it.

In fact, what I was witnessing wasn’t creepy staring. Mesdames et Messieurs, THIS WAS RODENT DUTY.

Oh. Mon. Dieu.

After prowling suspiciously around the kitchen for some time, Catorze was rewarded for his efforts: he dived underneath the sideboard and emerged with a twitching mouse in his mouth. Cat Daddy and I watched, frozen in horror, as he licked it from top to toe, but I snapped out of my shock-trance and was able to whisk it away before he could leave his customary serial killer calling card (eating the head).

Classic suspicious prowling pose.

At the time of writing this, Catorze had barely eaten any food since the incident. I am now terrified that his taste for mouse blood is so irresistible that no other food will do.

Do we have a mouse infestation from which our hero cat is dutifully liberating us?

Had he brought the mouse in and saved it for later?

And, if this is the kind of caper that takes place with no celestial or magical intervention, what on earth can we expect WITH said intervention?

Catorze knows the answers. But I don’t imagine he’ll tell us.

Cat Daddy likes to think it’s a welcome home gift, but I’m not sure …

I discovered mouse poo in one of the holiday cottages I manage. I’m wondering if honorary cat, Popsie, can assist or if I actually need a cat. 🤔

It wouldn’t surprise me. She’s addicted to balls, and mice can roll up. She might have decided it was a ball 🤷🏻‍♀️

We do have two farm cats but they are the siblings of my naughty torties so still too small. Not that my two think they are small! Fearless springs to mind!

She’s daft as a brush so nothing would surprise me. She chases the rats and barks at the foxes.

She destroyed a ball yesterday. I took it away as it was a ball only in spirit, but she found a piece less than an inch long and it still qualified as a ball.

Ramses is my little Apex predator and caught two mice outside in the patio last year. As always, he gets praised and the victim gets a prayer and burial way outside his territory. Oh, and he gets a treat as a consolation prize.

Does he ever bring them indoors and release them?

He brings them indoors to me, but they’ve already been dispatched with a bite to the neck. I have to wait for him to release them from his steel jaws, though, before I can take them outside to my “prey cemetary” in the ivy…along with a prayer.

    Unfortunately, I can’t help you.
Here, the rodent source seems depleted. The last animal which was brought into the place was a living bird I helped to fly away.

Actually, when I saw the bird, it was in Timon’s mouth. I picked up the cat with the bird to bring them outside and the bird took advantage of the movement to fly away.

I once had to wrestle Luther to get a mouse out of his mouth, and he was not letting go. In fact, he enjoyed the combat and purred.

In this case, I hadn’t to fight with Timon. The poor one opened his mouth by himself and the bird flew away.

Don’t forget that we have a super moon coming up. This is all just to confuse you.

Just like Baggyarse sat in his carrier with the door open on the train yesterday. He did it to confuse me.

I LOVE indoors cats 😀 (by the way, I was quite sick yesterday morning, and Rosie, who usually hides and rarely comes out from under the bed, kept an eye on me the whole morning, watching me carefully (from afar) while I went to the bathroom, threw up my guts, went to the kitchen to feed her, etc. until I was back in bed. It was really adorable :))

Oh no, I’m so sorry you were sick! At least you didn’t have to deal with birds or mice. And it was your own puke you had to manage, not Rosie’s. 😬

Oh my goodness what a shock!! I would be horrified, having dealt with such an incident years ago when I found my beautiful tux Fido with his claws entangled under my fridge freezer! He had an extra claw on his feet which is why he got stuck, the mice were laughing at him while running up and down the wall cavity to the third storey lift, loads of them, I think I already told you about it. Just be very glad you don’t live in the countryside… My downstairs neighbours were in their flat yesterday afternoon minding their own business, with their little chihuahua who looks extremely like Merlot. It was beautifully sunny (for one day only 😭). Suddenly Pete saw something on the floor, he quickly told Sandy to pick little Star (the chi) up, she said ‘what? Why?’ Pete repeated ‘pick the dog up quick’ Sandy picked the dog up, Pete said look as he pointed to the floor and there was about a 3foot SNAKE on the carpet!!! 🤢. With that the snake turned around and slithered out 🤢🤢🤢 suddenly a sweet little mouse or 10 doesn’t such a bad thing as I’m totally phobic of snakes. Luckily, as adders are rife around here, it was a grass snake, this doesn’t make me feel any better and I suddenly stopped longing for a ground floor flat here!!

Good grief! Was this in the U.K.? I follow another cat blog whose cat brought a snake in, then brought it back in a second time after it was chucked out!

Yes it was my neighbour downstairs!! In Aldington Ashford, nothing brought it in it found its way around a barrier they have across their open patio door to keep mice or any other uninvited and unwanted guest away and their little chihuahua in!! There are snakes all around here in the countryside and fortunately I have only ever seen one and it was saeinming across the huge pond round the playing fields. There are adders around here too. I absolutely freak out if I so much as catch a glimpse!! Put TN25 7FZ in Google maps and change it to Satellite view and you will see we have fields as far as the eye can see out the back and a small woodland at the end of the car park!! I’ll send you the video of the grass snake swimming across the pond if I can find it!!

Andy acts out a “mousie” routine where I have to open all the kitchen cabinets one by one for his review of an infestation that never is there. I wonder, what he’d do if a real mouse popped out one day?

It’s tough when Cats decide to change their diets. Finnegan has adhered to a strict paleo, gluten-free, raw, locally sourced summer diet inspired by his Lion cousins for several years now. Louis’ diet sounds even more restrictive if he’ll only partake of the head.

It’s an old farmhouse, so it’s not well-sealed. When it starts to get cold, the mice come inside.
