*Most likely because a cat started it.

Dogs or cats?

A colleague and I were once talking about dating. No, not the two of us dating each other, but about dating as a general concept and, more specifically, what people ought to reveal about themselves on the first date. I added, “Most blokes would be off like a shot when I told them I like cats.”

When faced with a comment like this, the only polite response is, “Don’t be silly, of course they wouldn’t” or some such thing. But, instead, he said, “Yup. And quite rightly so.”

Oh dear.

Does society see us as extensions of the animals that we like? Do others think dog people are loyal, affectionate and obliging? And, cat people, are we regarded as unreliable, aloof and unhinged?

Even Cat Daddy, who likes cats, has been known to make this judgement. If a friend of mine, whom he hasn’t met before, is due to visit, and I tell him that the friend is “a cat person”, he makes a face. And, if I add that I met this friend via an online cat forum, he suddenly remembers that he has a very important appointment, somewhere far away, which happens to coincide with the friend’s visit.

Having met a lot of cat people, both in person and online, I have to admit that most of us are a bit weird. But, usually, it’s in a good way. I know that it sounds dismissive and clichéd to say, “We’re not ALL crazy!”, especially if you see some of the petty yet vicious arguments that kick off on online cat forums (usually between Brits and Americans, usually triggered by a debate about whether or not cats should be allowed outdoors). But … well … we’re NOT all crazy. Despite the fact that I named my cat Sa Majesté Louis Catorze, Le Roi Soleil, I really am one of the more normal ones. And, the more cat people that Cat Daddy meets, the more he is coming to realise this, too.

So: dogs or cats? If you’re a friend, you won’t need to ask because you will already know the answer. If strangers ask, in order to distance myself from those complete freaks whose behaviour is embarrassing (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE), I will probably say, “Both”. It’s not an outright lie, because I like the IDEA of dogs; I am super-cordial when I meet them, and I don’t like it when people are mean to them. But do I want to share a house with one? Not really.

That said, there are times when I don’t want to share a house with Louis Catorze, either. But, now that he’s in, we have no idea how to get him out (and we’re scared that he might do something bad to us if we tried). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have been known to excessively talk about cats when I wish an unwelcome male to get the hell away from me. Works better than just being an outright b***h. 🐱

Ohhh, I must try that approach! In fact, I’ve just remembered a video that I saw years ago of a woman crying, and when she can finally bring herself to speak she says, “I just … love cats!” Must send that to my colleague and tell him I’ve found his future wife.

All you can do is to keep sa Majesté fed and pleased, there’s really no other way. It’s funny that there is such a stigma toward cat people. It seems to me that there are as many if not more people going cuckoo over their doggies… I like both, but I do prefer cats as furry companion, even the evil scheming ones 😉. 😺

Evil, I guess it is relative. Scheming, definitely. 🤣

Most of my friends are all cat people, thank goodness. I always get a strange feeling when meeting dog people, probably because I just don’t like dogs. And yes, most of us are a bit weird. But, like you mentioned, it’s in a good way. 🙂
Btw, I’m having a party today outside in the garden. I invited all my cat people friends over for espressos and chocolade cake. Jimi is not amused, he doesn’t like a crowded garden…

Ohhh, Le Roi would have been there like a shot, although he would have been all over the men and ignored the women, of course. And I think the idea of an espresso and cake party is magnificent.

One more thing; song #9 from the Sgt. Pepper’s album appears a few times on the playlist… 😉

If the guests were bringing their cats, too, I think that would make a very interesting experiment! Will the rest of the playlist be cat-themed?

Of course, and even all the napkins have a black cat face printed on it. Louis would love it too…

Last century, we had both a dog and a cat.
Now, we only have a cat. The older you get, the harder picking up dog poop is from the pavement.

That is one thing that I like about cats: at least they have the grace to take care of their own. 😬

Most of my discussions with cat friends center around exactly you turn from a cat lady to a crazy cat lady. Will 4 cats do it? Or is it all the pictures you show? Maybe the number of cat beds you have in the house. Right now I’m at my desk with 3 cats sitting on the cabinet under the window. They are supervising their realm and plotting mayhem.

I think that’s what makes it so funny: you have multiple beds for them whilst they look down on you and think you’re pathetic. 🤣🤣🤣

I began as a dog lover and gradually learned to love cats rather than just see them as part of the background. Now, older and tireder, cats are about all I can summon the energy t deal with. No malice toward dogs; enjoy them when I meet them (if they are friendly).

Always – until my last dog- an old beagle-died of old age about 5 year ago. The dogs were outside in a fenced yard and the cats were inside.

After starting my current job (March 2022), I discovered I was in a “dog office”. They were even considering getting an office dog! The only other cat person just got a dog to go with their two cats. It’s been a real adjustment.

Cat Daddy’s office once had an office dog, too, so I sympathise. People used to complain about the smell of the stinky bones that it used to chew. 🤢🤢🤢
