Louis Catorze is going to the vet today so, to cheer him up a little, we watched a vampire film called Day Shift at the weekend. As ever, he showed no reaction to the hisses of his bloodsucking counterparts, nor to the pounding rock music accompanying the fight scenes, but he did up and take notice when the vampires were rounding up cats to keep as familiars:

Me: “Was it the cats or the men that caught your attention?” Le Roi: “Oui.”

Catorze has a condition called Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORL). There is more information about it here but, in essence, it’s the teeth eating themselves. It’s pretty grim. Once it takes hold, it keeps coming back, and sometimes it’s easier to remove lots of teeth at once, rather than subject poor kitty to multiple surgeries removing a few teeth at a time. In the event of the vet recommending a full extraction, I am ready for it. But I really, really hope he will get to keep the famous fangs. (Catorze, I mean. Not the vet.)

Please keep the little sod in your thoughts today. And thank you to everyone who has already sent good wishes.

Maybe he should just sleep through this bit.

One of our kitties had all his teeth pulled except for his fangs, which then fell out on their own, they were so bad. Resorptive lesions are not rare in cats, so he will probably be all right and may keep his fangs. (Our kitty had stomatitis, which often results in the loss of all teeth and you are right that getting them pulled at once will e easier on Louis and on the vet bill and he will only need to be knocked out once.) We do send him (and the vet – and you and CD) purrayers and Power of the Paw.

Merci! I know it’s a common procedure but I worry because he’s not getting any younger. 😥

Oh bless his little heart, Merlot and I are keeping him in our thoughts, it’s Merlot’s checkup today and he’s likely to be recommended for more teeth to come out. It’s a tough decision to put Merlot under anaesthetic as he is so tiny, weight between 2.5 to 3kg and he doesn’t recover well. Also I can catch kennel cough from Merlot’s vaccine but I’m fearful of him catching it so I have to choose whether to let him have it. As 23rd was Merlot’s 11 th birthday these decisions become more difficult. Here’s hoping that dear Louis recovers from his operation very quickly and screams his head off wanting to leave the vets xxx

Merci! Oh God, yes, they will be desperate to be rid of him when it’s all over! And, yes, it’s the age rather than the procedure which makes me worry. Catorze is going to be thirteen in three months’ time! How is Merlot doing?

Le Roi won’t be the same without the fangs. So, yes, I do hope that he gets to keep them. However, I know that you’ll do whatever is best for the wee furry monster. Even if that means he becomes a fangless vampire kitty.

    Good luck Catorze.

Yes, if they have to come out then we can’t do much about that, but I really hope they can stay! Merci!

Watching a vampire movie with your cat? Really…?? I always thought cat people watched ‘Ratatouille’, the Pixar movie together with their cat. Well, at least I do… 😉
You’re both in my thoughts today, my dear friends. Wishing Louis all the best!

Merci! Cat Daddy has been spectacularly rubbish at giving me updates and all I know so far is that the little sod has been screaming bloody murder. Which I could have predicted anyway. 😩

Good luck today with the surgery and after care. Minouche had all his teeth out at the age of 13 and recovered fully and was much healthier following this. Louis will bounce back…. he’ll most likely extract many favours….but you love the little sod…

Merci! Were all Minouche’s teeth dodgy or did he have good ones taken out as a precautionary measure?

Oh no, not the fangs! I imagine the whole thing might be over by the time I write these words, but I will keep Sa Maj in my thoughts and wish him a speedy recovery and all his fangs intact 🙂 Much love and cuddles (to the kitty, not to you, obviously 😉 ) from Canada to my favourite little British furry vampire.

My 8 year old Gracie had 11 extractions in December. She came through it fine. Me, not so much. She has 3 teeth left, one fang and a matching bottom one. Not sure where the third one is but I’m sure if I stick my finger in her mouth, I will easily find it as it slices my flesh.

I’m sure Le Roi will be ok with fewer teeth. He can still hunt, it seems, but not chew up a piece of fish unless it’s cut up very small. 🤷‍♀️

I hope his vet visit went well. Our cat tigger had a similar problem. Our vet was constantly loading him up with steroids and antibiotics Our cat tigger had a similar problem. Our vet was constantly loading him up with steroids and antibiotics.

Poor Catorze! What a horrible condition 😦 Although I remember reading something a while back about a dentist who made new gold fangs for his cat after they had to be extracted. Something to consider, perhaps…)
