Je crie, donc je suis

I would like to move out to a rural area one day, later in life. Cat Daddy would probably do so now if he could, and he says that the only thing stopping him is the thought of a bird of prey picking off Louis Catorze, having mistaken him for a largeish rat or ferret or some such thing.

I always used to laugh this off. However, Cat Daddy showed me a post from our local neighbourhood social media group, which has (sort of) proven his fears to be correct.

The lady who had posted lived in a suburban area, and her cat was having a nap outside when a red kite swooped. Luckily, when he moved, the bird realised that its prey was actually alive – and, since red kites apparently favour dead prey, this was a huge NON. So it aborted its plan, and the cat lived to nap another day.

Catorze’s fondness for napping outside, along with his past history for pissing off the avian contingent, mean that country living is probably not a great idea. If crows can tell their friends all about humans who have wronged them, surely parakeets and magpies can pass a message to their neighbouring birds of prey? He wouldn’t be a very filling snack, but he’d be pretty easy pickings.

Here is Catorze, having a little rest in what used to be a herb trough but now isn’t (because of him).

A sandwich short of a picnic.

I think you are right to be concerned! Some of these larger birds of prey have been reported to go after cats. We saw huge owls in the forested country when we lived there. Now we’re in town with one of the few secluded yards, and we photographed an enormous hawk recently. Fortunately we’ve already taken in the free-ranging unowned cats who lived there.

I do laugh a bit when I think of Catorze hanging limply from the talons of a large owl, his screams ringing out through the countryside. 🤣🤣🤣

Poor Louis. Aren’t you a bit afraid of him finding out this unfair answer 😀 ?

I didn’t know there were red kites in the UK. I didn’t know those birds were scavengers either.
Cat Daddy is right, you are meant to protect Louis, you must be cautious.

By the way, the picture is lovely. Is it a recent one?

The photo is from September, pre-pancreatitis. He’s starting to look more and more like that now, after a massive downturn when he was hospitalised.

You do well to protect Sa Maj. In the USA, hawks and larger birds DO hunt/carry off not only pigeons & rodents, but cats & small dogs as well 😓

Hawks average about 2 to 2 1/2 kilos but some dog & cat breeds weigh about as much as they do.

Catorze is only barely more than that! 😬

It always pays to be cautious when it comes to him!

We live in a pretty urban/suburban area but frequently see birds of prey like hawks and owls. Human Daddy is always cautious about our cats and “smaller” dogs. I appreciate my husband’s caution, but our well fed fur children strike me as a bit too heavy for anything less than a velociraptor to carry aloft.
