Je crie, donc je suis

What are your best healthy eating habits?

I don’t know whether one could describe Louis Catorze’s regime as “healthy” when he eats the best food in the world yet also takes a shit-ton of drugs, but tant pis.

I decided to change Catorze’s dry food a month or so before we went on holiday. Although he was doing ok on Orijen Original Cat, I felt that he quite liked it but didn’t really love it. And, after reading about Orijen Guardian 8 and its better suitability for older cats, I wondered if it might be worth a try.

Guardian 8 is so called because of the eight major benefits, as follows:

  • Immune support (which Catorze desperately needs, as he’s always been a sickly little beast)
  • Digestive health (ditto)
  • Healthy skin and coat (ditto – his skin and coat look like shite)
  • Heart health (ditto, assuming his heart murmur is real and that he’s not faking just for attention)
  • Muscle maintenance (his muscles seem to be ok at the moment, but I guess this can’t hurt)
  • Joint health (he’s a bit rickety but, again, can’t hurt)
  • Brain function (I guess we don’t need to worry about this one)
  • Eye health

Upon opening the pack, I discovered that the pieces are smaller than those of the other Orijen variants. This has to be a good thing since Catorze himself is both small AND missing a few teeth.

Anyway, he has been eating the new food with no drama whatsoever, alongside his Cool Cat Club wet food in the morning. Let’s hope that we will soon see an upward trend in his post-pancreatitis weight loss soon.

Catorze needs to chub up a little more.

Well, in the photo, he does look alert, oriented, and a bit pissed, and that’s good!

Cat Daddy was cooking fillet steak at the time, and the smell had permeated outside!

Sometimes senior foods have less calories because many older cats are a little chubby. You can check the calorie count against his other food to see if there is a difference. I hope it works for him.

That’s a good point: I will check that out. There were some I was avoiding due to his hyperthyroidism, but I think we’re now at the point where I just want him to eat whatever he wants.

Yes, I know that feeling. They wanted Gus on prescription food for his urinary issues but he didn’t eat it. He’s been on a wet food regiment since his surgery 3 years ago and has been doing fine. His vet is ok with it. Any food is better than no food.

I cannot tell you how happy we are to see a current pic – what a sweetheart he is. ❤.

Interesting about Orijen Guardian 8. Diego was fed a diet of Fussie Cat and Orijen but when I adopted Ramses he couldn’t keep Orijen down. He loved it but kept throwing it up then going back for more. The vet said it was probably too rich for his system. Ramses can no longer tolerate wet food of ANY type as it gives him leakages (that’s the only word I have to describe it). Not really diarrhea, just leakage. I can sympathize with your having to try different foods to see what “works”. Ramses is now on a diet of Fussie Cat dry food, organic chicken, and homemade bone broth – although we found some organice chicken bone broth at the store that is JUST broth that I might try with him. The broth and broth-like toppings are to ensure he gets plenty of fluids. ALTHOUGH, he has recently begun drinking water. These felines constantly keep us on our toes, don’t they?

Home-made chicken broth! What a lucky boy he is!

I’ve never heard of Fussie Cat. I don’t think you can get it in the UK. Catorze has Cool Cat Club wet food in the morning, and Orijen at night. One of my other blog friends pointed out that Guardian 8 may be lower in calories as most older cats have chubbed up, so I may have to consider swapping back to a higher-calories one at some stage.

I started making and giving what I have named “Mommy Broth” to Ortoloni when I saw what it did for a dog that was – literally – skin and bones. It’s really easy to make. Here’s the recipe:

Oh my, Le Roi is going to start wanting this now!

You might be pleasantly surprised at the changes after you do. Ortoloni turned into a kitten almost overnight, which made me realize for years he’d never been 100% – which made me sad.

Thank you for this recent picture. Poor Louis looks like a soldier who has just come back from the war. Has he already started screaming again?

Yes, he has. Not all the time, but occasionally. We’ve noticed his silence means he’s unwell or stoned!

Oh poor sweetie, he looks like he’s gone to war and back! This breaks my heart, I want to cuddle him and feed him anything he wants and just tell him how much I love him over and over and over ❤ He’s such a precious, feisty, funny, and incredible tiny ball of cuteness!
