Je crie, donc je suis

Do you need a break? From what?

If I were to mention an itchy black cat in a Cône, you would be forgiven for thinking that I were talking about Louis Catorze. However, this time it’s his cat-cousin Rodan who has come a cropper.

Rodan could do with a break from scratching. However, the only person who can decide this is him, and he ain’t stopping.

Not only did poor Rodan scratch himself to smithereens, forcing deployment of Le Cône, but, once healed, he did it again less than a minute after Le Cône’s removal. And not only did he unheal all the just-healed skin, but he also managed to scuff up a whole load of new areas which were fine before.

Mothra says, “Stop it, bro.”

Poor Rodan HATES Le Cône. Whilst no animal really loves it, Catorze was quite stoical and never really got depressed about it, instead channelling his energy into all manner of Cône-bearing misadventures*. (And it was just as well, really, because, during lockdown, he spent a hell of a lot of time wearing it.)

*If you ever thought that a Côned cat couldn’t get up to much mischief, you’d be mistaken. We had rodents, altercations with bird life, getting stuck on plants and shrubs, you name it.

However, Rodan is really down about it. Everything about his Côned body language screams sadness. Oh, and his eyes are a bit manky, presumably due to him not being able to groom. Yet whenever anyone tries to clean them, he is – how can I put this? – not compliant.

Please send Rodan healing, stop-scratching wishes.

Get well, silly boy.

UPDATE: Rodan has been to the vet and, in the few minutes sans Cône whilst the vet treated him, he scratched with such ferocity that the vet binned the plan to give him steroid tablets and decided on the heavier-duty injection instead. He has also been prescribed antibiotic eye drops (due to the mess he’s made of his eye), and he will need to remain avec Cône AND have his eyes cleaned daily for the next two weeks. Oh my.

I was about to say, “Same!” but then I’ve been through this exact same thing with Catorze. 😬

Poor Rodan! I do hope the steroids stop the itching.

Thanks! He’s been better since the vet appointment but obviously he still can’t be trusted without Le Cône.

I hope Mothra isn’t adding insult to injury by making fun of him.

It’s the sort of thing she’d do. She has a mean streak.

Cats are as human beings. They aren’t equal when they have to face troubles. Take heart, poor Rodan. And of course, take heart, poor Rodan’s family. I’m sending all of you good vibes from Belgium 😺 .

Black cats aren’t the only ones likely to behave so. One day, a former cat of ours, who was a female tabby managed to scratch so much her forehead that we could make out her bone.

I always pray for children and animals and will put in a special prayer for poor Rodan.

That’s so kind of you! (Even though it’s his own silly fault that he’s ended up here!)

Aww, poor kitty. I hope the medicine works soon. I’ve never given eye drops to a cat. It sounds like a challenge.

I’ve had to give a kind of eye ointment to Catorze, from a squeezy container, and it was not fun. Rodan sounds worse. 😬

Praying Rodan heals quickly. He may need more frequent nail trimming. There must be something(s) in either his indoor or outdoor environment that triggers allergens? Is his bedding washed with scented detergent, perhaps? Or it may be air freshener, incense, etc?

He doesn’t really have a designated bed; he just sleeps on the humans’ furniture. I imagine that because he goes outside, it’ll be impossible to pin it down to just one thing. I was told the same by our vet about Catorze; if the animal or the humans go outside at all, it could be some airborne thing.

oh it’s hell on earth for everyone in these situations and so heartbreaking to watch the fallout. How strange the itching is, Lola constantly slurpy licking washing sounds make me want to vom…. Sounds unholy and like being stuck around affectionate inappropriate teenage behaviour that occurred once when I stayed with a promiscuous friend, not kidding this makes me heave just remembering!! So I went through various different types of food (oh the little sodney is doing it as I type, how does she know??) she’s full of beautiful shiny fur and it was part of her unhealthy weight gain and I’ve still not cured it, but at least it’s much less than it was. I do know as you do too that household cleaners, scented things and especially vacuum-able things create these problems as they do for me. I stopped the puppy pad skating by remembering I had a puppy pad holder from 8 years ago, so agter her initial banging in the bathroom trying so hard to get it to slide around the bathroom that annoyance is over. Lola did start by itching, the food now gets her body to dispose of hairballs in a much easier and manageable way, the diet wet food is either craved or hated depending on the way the wind is blowing and she lost a pound last week, only to put it back on this week plus 0.4lbs this week! At least she’s cut down on the slurping, I’ve yet to try ‘Burts Bees’ on her fur for fear of my own slow death, and yes, I live on poverty food rations while she and Merlot take or leave their food as they feel. Just couldn’t get my phone to let me respond to the post at the time xxx

Wow, 1lb is a lot for a cat to lose! How is Lola doing now?

Yes sshe was starting from a very underweight little cat when I got her just a year ago but putting on 6lbs wasn’t the plan, she lost the lb and then took herself to a whole new level of 10.4 lbs, I’vr zero idea how, I got my Merlot down to between 2.7 and 2.9kg from about 3.5kg and he’s so much better for it. I think the main problem started when I changed her to a weight loss diet and stupidly fed her the amount for the weight she had grown to, I know this was dumb but just looking at the silly little chart on the food I was so mislead! Also being an indoor cat and the disgusting weather we’ve been having she doesn’t get to go and spend hours a day in my allotment garden with me and Merlot but the vet assures me exercise really doesn’t count and it’s all down to the carefully measured out calories I’m giving her to eat. She eats mainly dry food with a half pouch of wet food that she usually leaves most of and that’s Royal Canin diet food which they say is great but it’s made of ‘animal derivatives’ which I shan’t be buying any more of but when you’re living on state pension you cannot afford to ditch food and buy yet another. I speak to the vet for advice but it never seems to make any sense. It was her constant scratching that I changed her to a hair all dry food. I’m considering going down the root of a completely dry diet, it can’t be good keeping swapping her food but one thing that has been good throughout is that she does healthy poops throughout, whereas when I got her it was vile!!

I don’t think changing food is so bad. It’s taken us a while to find the right thing for Catorze. Plus their constitution and tastes change as they get older.

Well it certainly doesn’t upset her tummy except for when she gets to eat some grass bless her. She’s 2 years 9 months now
