Louis Catorze gave us a massive scare a few nights ago.

I walked into the living room, where he was sound asleep, and he didn’t stir in the way that cats do when someone makes a noise during their nap. I called his name, even poked him in the body, all to no avail. I could see that the little sod was breathing, but he was utterly motionless.

I lifted his head up in my hand, and it lay in my palm like a weight. When I let him go, he flopped down, as if he were unconscious.

Oh. Mon. Dieu.

I called Cat Daddy, who was also quite alarmed when I demonstrated the heavy head thing again. Then, when Catorze heard his papa’s voice, somehow he snapped back from whatever parallel universe he was in, stirred gently and let out a breathy, fairylike squeak.

What just happened? And why on earth didn’t I video it, so that I would have something to show the vet if things turned to merde later? Perhaps it’s possible for cats to sleep so deeply that they’re unaware of any shouting and prodding going on, but this is nothing that I’ve ever seen before.

After the incident, Catorze was absolutely fine and acted as if nothing had happened. And, a day later, he was galloping around the house as if the devil were at his tail*, screaming absolute bloody murder. Nothing was wrong, and he didn’t want anything. This was just for fun.

*Not a wholly accurate comparison since the devil would probably run away from him, not vice versa, mais tant pis.

Please let me know if you have ever experienced this in a cat. (The deep sleep, I mean, not the racing around, screaming.)

Ortoloni did that once and, like you, I frickin’ freaked until he awakened.

Jenny sleeps very soundly but never to the heavy head state. She stirs after a couple of hard prods.

Is Jenny a similar age to Catorze?

Morgan sleeps deeply and I’ve scared her by coming up for a nose boop but she wakes up fast then. He must have been counting smoked salmon.

He must’ve been! Have your gang ever had the floppy heads?

I’ve never had this happen with any of my cats, but this may just be because they have trained me not to touch them when they’re asleep. Dr. Google, though, says there’s nothing to worry about and a Reddit post I found even suggests that Louis’ extremely deep sleep shows he trusts you very much.

I really hope that’s the case. Even Cat Daddy was worried about the silly sod.

Very rarely, and with different cats, I have had brief examples. One time I woke up and the cat sleeping net to me appeared to be dead, just as you describe. I did the same -shake -and -holler thing. Another time, I was reading and the cat was leaning against my upper arm Suddenly the cat flopped over, going limp – as if she had just had a fatal event. But she had just fallen into a deeper sleep. I have read that their usual sleep level is actually pretty light (thus “catnaps”) as thy are on some level of alert. You are definitely not alone in experiencing this, and it can be quite unsettling !

Have your cats always been fine afterwards?

Yes. This has only happened maybe half a dozen times in all my cat-owning career and the cats were not especially young or old and had no medical conditions.

The Gray Menace could be a very sound sleeper at times, and very hard to arouse. We’d even tickle his belly, something he’d claw you for, when he slept like that. then he’d slowly wake up. I don’t know if sleep like that is normal in a cat, though – the Menace, Like Catorze, was far from normal/

Maybe it’s a trait of weird cats!

I can’t help you. It is the first time I have heard about such an incident. It could have been a kind of stroke without any consequence as it can happen to human beings too. Take heart.

Wow… that was a scary story! I can’t remember seeing this effect in one of my cats. Glad that Louis is back in our dimension.

Nothing like that, but once Calinette could not stand on her legs when I moved her from my bed to the floor, and that story had a really tragic ending…. So I totally understand how you can worry when stuff like that happens, I would totally panic!

That is a scary thing to happen and only happened to me once. It was at the time I had my first cat a girl named Cha-Cha. One night she was sleeping between my husband and me on the bed but one of my legs was behind her. I could not get out of bed to go to the bathroom, So I gently nudged her so she would move. Nothing, no response, I sat up in bed and shook her. Simply dead cat no response. I woke my husband and he shook and loudly called her name, Up came the head and the cat came back to animation. Luckily she did that only once but what it was or happened I never had any clue.

I believe she was 6 because we got her as a kitten from a friend’s garden and we were already well used to her and she to us so it was not the early days.

My dog did that once. I rushed him to the vet, who treated us like I was nuts. 😕
