What major historical events do you remember?
This one. Oh God, this one. Seven years ago yet forever carved onto my soul, for all the wrong reasons.

The worst historical event was probably the Aberfan disaster I was 6 at the time. I knew that there was some major mining related disaster going on because granny and her sisters started talking about relatives lost in pit accidents (Durham miners, see). It was years before I really understood what had happened. It has only been in recent years that the Board of Trade inquiry has been available online for proper study.
I’ve not had any major rodent related incidents thankfully. As a kid Smokey the cat lived up to his name and got stuck up the chimney. That used up at least one of his nine lives. More recently the Bag of Arse put me in hospital for a weekend on IV antibiotics by sinking a fang through a tendon in my thumb.
Oh my goodness, Baggyarse! How did that happen?

He was not happy about being brought in from the forbidden front. He managed to twist in my hands enough to sink a fang (or two) in me. Unfortunately he hit the tendon and two weeks of oral antibiotics didn’t sort it out and I was sent to hospital with no chance to even get a clean pair of pants.
Aw, poor boy. And poor you!

Yes. He was very twitchy for the first few months. It was impossible to touch his tail at all. I suspect that’s because the kids had been grabbing and pulling his tail. He deserved a chance and as a PTSD sufferer myself I knew it was going to take time to settle and that there were going to be lifelong triggers.
Now, he can be a cuddle bug and a food thief.
They all deserve a chance. If I can’t do anything with them then most people won’t be able to. Time, calm, and respecting boundaries works for most. He still has moments after 10 years. One of his moments (and it’s my own fault) is he knows where the ham is stored and if I ignore him he gets very grumpy sometimes to the point he’ll hiss and bat my ankle with murder mittens.
Most damage he does now is scratches when I don’t wake up and feed him on demand.
He’s not, but thanks anyway.

I feel you. I once found a dead rat in the washing machine… I almost touch it thinking it was a forgotten piece of clothing, it’s been about ten years and I still shudder at the thought. By chance, my partner was home and dealt with it. I dunno what I would have done by myself…
No cat involved or at least, not directly. The washing machine door was close and it is a top door, not a frontal one. But maybe Clément did scare the rat to find a hiding place, and there was a bit of space in the back of the washing machine that it could get in. It probably then fell in and could not escape… I’ll never know, and it is probably for the best that I do not know more…
