I have decided to call this little photo-story “What the hell is happening here?”

Preparation.
Approach.
Launch.
Flight.
Regret?

Although he did it in our previous house, Louis Catorze has never used the bathroom window here as an entrance or exit route – well, not to our knowledge. But, last night, for whatever reason, he did. Nobody knows why.

Once through, he arsed around outside for a while, making creepy shadows like a chupacabra, so I thought I’d leave him to it and go to bed.

This looks like no cat I have ever seen.

Then the screaming started.

For a while I ignored it, thinking he had jumped down to ground level, come in through the cat flap and started annoying Cat Daddy. Catorze’s screams are loud enough that they can be heard from another floor in the house. However, that wasn’t what had happened. The stupid little shite was still outside the bathroom window, and appeared to be stuck.

Where do I even START in unpicking how a cat who jumped out, can’t or won’t jump back in?

Eventually I couldn’t handle the screaming anymore, so I let Catorze back in and went back to bed. And, immediately, I regretted my decision, because I have now taught him that he has a new place through which, if he screams loudly enough and for long enough, some chump will let him back in.

So now it’s not a question of IF, but of WHEN Catorze will do this again. Will it be tomorrow night, and every night thereafter for the rest of his life? Or will he let me think he’s forgotten about it, then launch a surprise attack the night before I need to do something very important?

Timon is not talkative. He hardly screams, but a mere miaow of his, launched near my ears, is able to wake me up and I can’t handle it either. I get to my feet as a good servant has to do 😺.

Is he a large cat? It seems that large ones are either quiet or have a dainty, fairylike meow, whereas small ones won’t shut up.

Timon is rather large, indeed, but I’m not sure if this has any influence on his way of communicating with us.

Yes, it seems that the size of the cat is inversely proportional to the volume of the voice.

I like your mathematical answer. Unfortunately, WP doesn’t allow me to click the appropriate button.

This looks like a scene from ‘The Great Escape’, the 1963 film with Steve McQueen! 🙂

I haven’t seen it but I don’t suppose Steve McQueen got stuck after escaping, and had to scream to be let back in?

Not exactly… he was caught a few times by the Nazi’s and thrown back in jail, kinda… And he wasn’t a black cat of course… 😉

OMG I wonder if this is a black cat conspiracy? Theo is big enough to stand on his back legs and look out of Alice’s deepest windows, it’s not been a problem as he’s an indoor cat and very afraid of the big outside, especially we thought as the bathroom is on the main road side of the house so can be very noisy with cars, buses and very noisy people around. BUT Alice was in the kitchen the other day with the window slightly open and she heard a little noise, turned and there was Theo squeezing in the window and his fur felt very hot like he’d been out in the hot sunshine!! He has since done it again but the question is how on earth would he be able to get back in if the kitchen window is shut?? Xxx

Well, they can’t get back in even if the window is open! Cats are the kings of going one way but not the reverse. That said, my mum once had a sausage dog who walked all the way down a water pipe. He couldn’t turn around to come back on account of his sausage shape, and he was too stupid to think of walking backwards, so they had to break open the pipe and get him out.

INSIDE??? Wow I’ve heard it all now!! It could have been lost forever, how did you know it was there? And I’m hyperventilating right now because I have moderate claustrophobia on behalf of anything stuck inside anywhere!!

It was my mum’s dog, before I was born, so I wasn’t there when it happened. They found out because they heard him barking!

Dogs and cats can walk backwards, but, in my experience, they don’t seem to like doing it much, so I can understand why the sausage dog didn’t put himself in reverse. If one of my cats and I meet in a narrow space they will not back up without a lot of urging on my part. Usually it is easier for me to back up.

Good luck with Louis now that he has trained you for his new trick !

My mum has just told me that the dog was a bit of a chonk, so that won’t have helped.

You might try reducing the top opening of that window if you think (hope) that will dissuade him, (she foolishly suggested. ) Or rig a recording snippet of Cat Daddy playing guitar, set to trip when it senses Sa Majs’ paws? 🙀 Of course, as light as he is, I suppose this suggestion is mere folly…
